About
the AVID Program
The
Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program was
initiated here at Clairemont High School in 1980. Head of the
English department at the time, Mary Catherine Swanson was determined
to help integrate the influx of underserved inner city students
into our academically acclaimed school. Her solultion was AVID.
As an academic elective, the philosophy behind the program is:
to hold students accountable to the highest standards, provide
academic and social support, and they will rise to the challenge.
AVID is an essential strategy for closing the achievement
gap and making the college dream accessible to all students.
|
AVID
now operates in over 1,900 middle and high schools in 30 states
and 15 countries, serving more than 105,000 students.*
|
| |
AVID works within the regular school day and includes an elective
class, trained tutors, an AVID teacher, and a site team of teachers,
focusing on college preparation, writing, inquiry, and collaboration.
This elective class that students attend daily. Twice a week,
college tutors visit the AVID classes to tutor students. Mentors
may visit with students on a weekly basis to encourage and help
them achieve the goal of attending a four-year college or university.
|
|
AVID students are provided an opportunity to visit colleges
and universities in the local area. Guest speakers are invited
to discuss careers. Students are encouraged to explore occupations
and visit their mentor's places of work to further understand
what each career entails.
