Gifted
and Talented Education (GATE)
The
GATE program at Jean Farb Middle School
is delivered through the humanities classes, three hours a day for
6th grade, two hours a day for 7th grade, and two hours a day for
8th grade, each week of the school year.
Students
in our GATE classes have been placed in one of two ways:
- They
are either certified GATE and have passed the district’s
GATE test or
- They
are high achievers with high scores on standardized tests (above
90 on the Raven, SDRT, SAT-9) and have been recommended by teachers.
GATE
students will be required to maintain a grade of "C" or
better in all GATE courses or they will be placed on academic probation.
Parents
will be notified in two ways that their child is on academic probation:
through a report card signifying a D or lower in any GATE class
and/or by a letter sent home from the school. The parents, student
and teacher will work together to write a Supportive Learning
Plan that will identify the intervention strategies each
will be responsible for implementing. If the grade is not brought
up to at least a “C” by the required report period,
that student will be placed into regular education classes.
