The Board of Education made the following appointments 5-0, with the effective dates to be determined. PRINCIPALS and VICE PRINCIPALS: LYNN BATCHELOR to Principal, Gage Elementary School, from Vice Principal, Gage Elementary School. THOMAS LIBERTO, to Principal, Jerabek Elementary School, from Principal, McKinley Elementary School. IRIS SELF, to Principal, Cadman Elementary School, from Administrative Intern, Central Elementary School. MYRA PERDOMO-MELENDEZ to Vice Principal, Boone Elementary School, from Peer Coach/Staff Developer, Garfield Elementary School. CENTRAL OFFICE POSITION: VIRA VILLARREAL, to Legal Specialist, from Paralegal, Gateway, Inc. The Board of Education made the following appointments 3-2, Zimmerman and de Beck voting no, with the effective dates to be determined. CENTRAL OFFICE POSITIONS: RAY CONSER, to Program Specialist, Science, from teacher, Kwachiiyoa Charter School. DANINE EZELL, to Program Specialist, Science, from teacher, Preuss School. DONALD WHISMAN, to Program Specialist, Science, from teacher, Lakeside Union School District. REGARDING MAJOR AGENDA ITEMS: The board heard an information report on a proposed pilot study to incorporate a new Proposition MM elementary school within an overall urban master plan and project in the City Heights area. The board held a public hearing in the matter of certification of sufficient textbooks or instructional materials. It approved 4-1, with de Beck voting no, a resolution that each district school meets the state Education Code requirement in having had prior to the end of the 2000-2001 fiscal year and will have prior to the end of the 2001-2002 fiscal year sufficient textbooks or instructional materials, or both, in each subject, that are consistent with the content and cycles of the curriculum framework adopted by the State Board of Education. The resolution notes that there is an exception for science textbooks and materials at grades 6, 7, and 8 because the State Board of Education does not plan an interim adoption of materials and textbooks for those grades until 2002 to meet the state's science curriculum instructional standards. The board approved 4-1 a new magnet focus at Freese Elementary School on Enhanced Literacy Through Arts and Culture. De Beck voted no. The board approved 4-1 a new magnet focus at Fulton Elementary School on Literacy Technology. De Beck voted no. The board approved 5-0 a one-year contract, in an amount not to exceed $7 million, with the URS Corp., for program management services for Proposition MM. The board approved 5-0 a resolution by trustee Ron Ottinger to support placing on a public ballot the Beach Ban on Alcohol Ordinance. The ordinance was passed by the San Diego City Council but is now subject to either recision or a public vote due to a successful petition drive by opponents of the ban. |
