Selecting the Right Book
For First Graders

modified 01/26/2004

Apple Make the selection of books you read a joint effort.  It is important to keep in mind your child's interests and his/her abilities.
Apple Select books from various places; old favorites from home, public  library, borrow from a friend or neighbor, purchase from used book stores , garage sales, buy a new book, or order books from a book club.
Apple Selecting the same book over and over again is fine.  We call them "old favorites."
Apple When you read select book that are above your child's reading ability to challenge their listening skills, introduce them to good literature and build their vocabulary.
Apple When you have your child read, select books at his/her independent level.  Encourage your child to track with their finger and don't forget to "picture walk."
