DISTRICT MISSION STATEMENT:

It is the mission of the San Diego City School District to educate all students in an integrated setting to become responsible, literate, thinking, and contributing members of a multicultural society through excellence in teaching and learning.

LANGUAGE ARTS

READING:

The ability to read is a basic freedom of education for all students. Language Arts programs reflect the philosophy of the state language arts framework. Students will be able to:

  1. Enjoy reading
    • Self select a variety of books
  2. Use a variety of reading strategies
    • Make and confirm predictions
    • Read a variety of materials
    • Use reference materials
    • Draw inferences, making conclusions and summarizing
    • Reinforce the use of phonics
    • Participate in dramatic events (choral reading, hot seat, readers theater)

  3. Read for Meaning
    • Understand setting, characters and plots
    • Compare and contrast
    • Develop critical thinking skills
    • Reflect upon own progress through use of journals
    • Develop vocabulary
    • Read with expression
    • Follow a sequence of directions

WRITING / SPEAKING / LISTENING:

The ability to communicate, in written and oral form is critical for all students. It crosses all curriculum areas and is an integral skill in all subject areas.

Students will be able to:

  1. Enjoy writing
    • Use the writing process
    • Maintain a personal portfolio
  2. Produce a variety of compositions
    • Paragraphs
    • Letters
    • Poems
    • Reports
  3. Use correct grammar, spelling, punctuation and capitalization in writing
  4. Oral Presentations
  5. Use technology as a tool of communication and learning.

MATHEMATICS

All children should develop a strong sense of mathematical power and confidence.
In these mathematical strands, students will be able to:

LOGIC AND LANGUAGE

  • Make logical predictions and conclusions about situations through exploring literature
  • Use problem solving skills

GEOMETRY

  • Identify basic geometric figures and their properties
  • Recognize symmetric and congruent figures

FUNCTIONS AND PATTERNS

  • Understand the four basic operations (+, -, x, div)
  • Know basic addition, subtraction and multiplication facts
  • Find, make and describe patterns

DISCRETE MATHEMATICS

  • Construct Venn diagrams
  • Understand concepts of fractions

COMMUNICATION

  • Relate physical materials, pictures, and diagrams to mathematical ideas.
  • Clarify and support their thinking about mathematical ideas and situations.
  • Relate their everyday language to mathematical language and symbols.

MEASUREMENTS

  • Measure length to the nearest unit
  • Choose the appropriate customary unit of length, weight, and capacity
  • Read a thermometer

 NUMBER

  • Understand the four basic operations (+, -, x, div)
  • Know basic addition, subtraction and multiplication and division (including decimals)
  • Estimate answers when appropriate
  • Use money to understand decimal value and understand basic fractions
  • Understand concepts of place value
  • Add and subtract four-digit numbers

ALGEBRA

  • Investigate relationships between numbers

STATISTICS AND PROBABILITY

  • Collect, organize, and analyze data from surveys and experiments
  • Construct graphs and tables to represent data collected from surveys and experiments

SOCIAL STUDIES

Students will:

  • Develop respect for and appreciate various cultural groups in history (past - present).
  • Develop the ability to work with others and be able to work cooperatively for the common good.
  • Identify physical features
  • Understand and be able to use maps, globes and time lines as tools for learning
  • Understand the necessity for protecting and preserving our environment.
  • Identify early settlers (up to Westward migration)
  • Develop appreciation for the Arts and how it can help people.
  • Share information with communities around the world.

Through studies of life, physical, earth and space sciences, students should:

  • Raise questions about the world

  • Communicate investigations and explanations
