During this week, the programs will provide picnic lunches at no cost to the students.  You may choose to send a lunch from home if you do not wish your child to receive one of the picnic lunches.  If your child will be bringing a lunch from home, it should be a nutritious sack lunch.  Milk will be available at no cost.  Students should bring their lunches in a paper bag with their names clearly written.  Since storage is limited, avoid sending lunch pails, backpack, or glass containers.

As part of the fourth-grade curriculum and the district's Race/Human Relations Program for all students, the San Diego Unified School District is offering your child a unique and valuable opportunity to participate in the Old Town Program.
All fourth-grade students in the district are eligible to participate in this program.  A group of approximately 280 students from two or more schools will center their studies around the resources of Old Town for one week of intensive instruction.
The children will be picked up by bus at their school of attendance and taken to the Old Town school site.  Upon arrival they will be organized into small integrated groups and assigned to a qualified staff member who will assist them in various educational experiences.
These experiences will include visits to such places as the Whaley House, Serra Museum, Heritage Park, Casa de Estudillo, the Mason Street School and other places of educational interest.
While working in integrated groups and expanding their awareness of many people and cultures that have contributed to the development of San Diego, the children will study five historical eras.

These eras are:

  • Native California
  • Spanish Colonial
  • Mexican Ranch
  • American Expansion
  • New Town/San Diego Expansion.

All necessary materials will be provided and there will be opportunities for discussions and cooperative learning, as well as time to make new friends among students of diverse racial, cultural, and ethnic heritages.
If your child rides a bus to school, they will still come to school at their regular time. At the end of the day, they will be taken from Old Town directly to the elementary school in your neighborhood which is within walking distance of your home.
Be sure your child knows how to walk home from that location, or plan to have someone meet him/her there. Buses will ordinarily arrive at your neighborhood school no later than 4:30 p.m., although it may be earlier depending on transportation routes.
Children who walk to school will receive instructions from the principal about the time they should report to school. At the end of the day, they will be returned to the geographic school of residence in their home neighborhood. Return time is no later than 4:40.
It is necessary to pick up your child from the Old Town site, please call the Old Town office (619) 293-4432 and, whenever possible, send a note with your child.

The program hours in Old Town are from 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
