DISTRICT MISSION STATEMENT:

It is the mission of the San Diego City School District to educate all students in an integrated setting to become responsible, literate, thinking, and contributing members of a multicultural society through excellence in teaching and learning.

DINGEMAN'S MISSION STATEMENT:

Literacy - Mathematics - Humanities - Science/Health


Literacy

READING:  The ability to read is a basic freedom of education for all students. Language Arts programs should reflect the philosophy of the state language arts framework.

Students will be able to:

  • Use context clues
  • Increase vocabulary
  • Develop reading appreciation of varied literary forms
  • Use phonics
  • Read across the curriculum
  • Select suitable reading
  • Use a variety of strategies
  • Increase critical thinking
  • Assess own progress
  • Read for meaning
  • Understand use of library and develop reference skills

WRITING:  The ability to communicate, in writing or orally, is critical for all students. It crosses all curriculum areas and is an integral skill in all subject areas.

Students will be able to: Writing Process

  • Value writing experience
  • Learn and use language correctly
  • Develop writing and spelling proficiency
  • Write in a variety of forms
  • Write for varied purposes
  • Understand prewriting, revision and the evaluation process

LISTENING AND SPEAKING

Students will be able to:

  • Plan and organize oral presentations
  • Develop speaking and listening skills across the curriculum
  • Listen and think critically
  • Gain confidence with communication experiences

Mathematics

MATH: All children should develop a strong sense of mathematical power.

Student will construct number meanings through real-world experience and use of physical materials.

NUMBER

  • Find the average
  • Know addition, subtraction, multiplication, division facts
  • Understand the concepts of place value
  • Understand and compare addition, subtraction, multiplication of fractions
  • Identify equivalent fractions, decimals
  • Solve problems involving money, using one or more of basic number operations
  • Solve two step problems
  • Explore estimation strategies and apply when appropriate

MEASUREMENTS

  • Know how to measure length, volume and weight
  • Explore formulas for perimeter, area and volume
  • Measure to the nearest one-eighth inch or centimeter

GEOMETRY

  • Identify, measure geometric figures
  • Construct, interpret broken line, circle and bar graph

LOGIC

  • Determine probability of a simple event
  • Justify answers and solution processes

PROBLEM SOLVING

  • Construct, investigate and discuss problem solving strategies

STATISTICS AND PROBABILITY

  • Obtain information from a map
  • Decision making
  • Predicting outcomes
  • Use graphs, tables and charts to present information

COMMUNICATION

  • Clarify and support thinking about mathematical ideas and situations
  • Relate every day language to mathematical language and symbols
  • Relate physical materials, pictures, and diagrams to mathematical ideas

Humanities

PHYSICAL SETTING: CALIFORNIA

  • Recognize major geographic regions and analyze development of these regions
  • Differentiate - state, country, continent

NATIVE AMERICANS

  • Study the activities, legends, and beliefs
  • Recognize diverse cultural contributions
  • Discuss impact of exploration on culture of Native Americans in California

SPANISH EXPLORATION AND COLONIAL HISTORY

  • Discuss the movement and economic effect of missions and settlements
  • Understand the role of Spanish politics on economics

MEXICAN CALIFORNIA

  • Discuss the Mexican War
  • Examine the transition of missions into ranchos and the economic impact
  • Compare and contrast law and it's relationship to social and political systems

GOLD RUSH, STATEHOOD, WESTWARD MOVEMENT

  • Create a time line of California history
  • Describe the discovery of gold in California, its mining and shipping
  • Demonstrate democratic principles in resolving conflicts between individuals and groups

THE PERIOD OF RAPID POPULATION GROWTH

  • Discuss California's connection to the east
  • Study impact of transcontinental railroad
  • Demonstrate knowledge and relationship of state and federal constitutions

MODERN CALIFORNIA

  • Learn development of modern economic systems and international relationship
  • Recognize history of prejudice and identify the American creed extolling equality
  • Study economic growth in the 20th Century

Science/Health

LIFE SCIENCE Students will:

  • Learn about the human skeleton
  • Learn about the stimulus and response process
  • Develop a plan for good health
  • Learn about the different joints and their movements
  • Learn about the muscles and how they affect movement
  • Learn what is needed to live and stay healthy

EARTH SCIENCE Students will:

  • Know the properties of water
  • Learn about water quality
  • Understand the changes that occur when water is heated and cooled
  • Learn about water vapor and evaporation

SCIENTIFIC REASONING AND TECHNOLOGY MEASUREMENT Students will:

  •   Learn to use standard units of linear measurement weight, volume, and temperature using degrees Celsius.

SCIENTIFIC REASONING AND TECHNOLOGY IDEAS AND INVENTIONS Students will:

  •    Do activities to learn scientific thinking process, including: rubbings, carbon printing, color writing, and reflecting
  •    Use the thinking processes, including observing communicating, comparing and organizing information
