The Colonial Living Museum
Here is a sample of some of the areas that students will be assigned to:
Students will be assigned to a building or a trade. They will need to work with their group to prepare a speech, make artifacts for visitors to take away with them, and to recreate the interior or exterior of their area. They will also be required to write a report. (Please see, the instructions for this report with and the rubric.) Students will be required to dress in appropriate "colonial" clothing. Boys should wear a white shirt and dark Mat-pants, baseball type pants or sweat pants. The pants must be able to be pushed up to their knees. Boys will need long white socks that will go up under the bottom of the pants, and if you can find a man's vest from a suit, that would be a great costume addition. (You can find some in thrift stores.) Teachers are looking for stores that sell three-cornered hats for you to purchase, so if you find one please report it to your student's teacher. Boys must wear dark shoes. No white tennis shoes please. Girls have two choices for clothing. They will need a long dark colored skirt and a white blouse. Every girl must wear a mobcap on her head. If your mother sews, you may choose to purchase some cotton, printed fabric and make a colonial dress. Patterns are available at the fabric stores. If you are gentry, (Governor's Palace) you will need to make a fancy, satin dress. The patterns also can be found at the fabric stores. Girls will need to wear dark shoes and white knee high stockings or tights. Parent volunteers are needed in the afternoons to help supervise the painting and to help build our "walls". Please let you student's teacher know as soon as possible if you are able to help. The Fifth Grade Teaching Staff
