ADVANCED ACADEMIC STUDIES

EXHIBITIONS:  The goal of Advanced Academic Studies is to attend to the social, intellectual, psychological, and physical needs of fifth grade students so they will become responsible, literate, thinking, and contributing citizens. Students will demonstrate the goals of Advanced Academic Studies at the end of the year through an exhibition addressing the six challenges.

LANGUAGE ARTS

READING/WRITING:  The ability to read is an essential life skill for all students. The Language Arts program reflects the philosophy of the state Language Arts framework and District Literacy Assessment Portfolio.

Students will:

  • Select appropriate books to read independently according to individual interests
  • Use prior knowledge to make predictions and draw conclusions
  • Recall important details from informational materials
  • Apply higher order thinking skills (recognize main idea, details, predict, summarize, evaluate)
  • Use reference materials, including technology
  • Read for meaning
  • Use the writing process and research process
  • Write well planned sentences / paragraphs / stories / reports
  • Show growth in writing proficiency
  • Gather and share information

SPEAKING/LISTENING/VIEWING:  The ability to communicate effectively through speaking, listening, and viewing is critical for all students. It crosses all curriculum areas and is an integral skill in all subject area.

Students will:

  • Develop skills to persuade others
  • Communicate effectively in one-on-one conferences
  • Reflect on an assess own performance as a speaker, listener, and viewer

MATHEMATICS

MATH: All children will develop a strong sense of mathematical power. The Mathematics program reflects the philosophy of the State.

MATHEMATICS AS COMMUNICATION

  • Present understanding in a variety of ways.

MATHEMATICS AS PROBLEM SOLVING

  • Use problem solving approaches to investigate and understand mathematical content.

GEOMETRY

  • Explore and discuss geometry

PATTERNS AND FUNCTIONS

  • Investigate whole number operations
  • Use pattern and function to represent and solve problems.

DISCRETE MATHEMATICS

  • Validate number operations through the use of calculators and computers
  • Construct graphs, tables and charts to present information and make predictions

MEASUREMENTS

  • Investigate measurement

NUMBER

  • Explore place value
  • Apply estimation
  • Understand part-whole relationships

ALGEBRA

  • Explore and recognize simple algebraic formulas
  • Apply algebraic methods to solve a variety of real-world and mathematical problems.

STATISTICS AND PROBABILITY

  • Explore change through manipulative
  • Collect, organize, and describe data
  • Model situations by devising and carrying out experiments or simulations to determine probabilities.

HISTORY/SOCIAL SCIENCE

All children will develop a strong sense of the constitution, civic values, rights and responsibilities. Activities may include simulations, living museums, field trips, and guest speakers.

Students will:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the rich cultural heritage shared as a result of the contributions of various racial and ethnic groups
  • Demonstrate knowledge of various Native Americans before and after colonization
  • Demonstrate knowledge of colonial settlements, political, social, economic change that led to Revolutionary War
  • Understand the major events leading to the Civil War and western movement.
  • Study U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights

SKILLS  Students will:

  • Understanding and using maps and globes
  • Familiarity with world geography
  • Read and interpret diagrams, graphs, charts
  • Locating, selecting and organizing information from primary and secondary sources

SCIENCE

Children will begin to develop an understanding of the world around us through experimentation, technology, exploration and prediction.

PHYSICAL SCIENCE:  Students will

  • Experience and investigate the relationships between the components of lever systems and of pulley systems
  • Systematically collect and record data using technology
  • Understanding variables

SCIENTIFIC REASONING AND TECHNOLOGY  Students will:

  • Use data to make predictions
  • Apply mathematics in context of science
  • Record a graph data to discover relationship
  • Use data to make predictions

LIFE SCIENCE  Students will:

  • Develop an attitude of respect and understanding for life
  • Observe and describe changes in complex environments and earth systems over time.

HEALTH  Students will:

  • Become informed consumers, able to gather information about food products
  • Observe and investigate properties of food
  • Acquire the vocabulary associated with nutrition

DARE  Drug Awareness, Resistance, Education Program
