by getting Involved

Modified on: 01/29/2004

Below you will find a list of places that 5th grade student's at Dingeman can volunteer their time for community service hours.  Each Student is required to put in a minimum of 12 hours of community service to meet their class obligation.  Feel free to contact any of these places to find out more information about how they can be of service to them.  If you have any other place that you would like to volunteer for, please contact a fifth grade teacher to discuss your choice.

Julian House is the largest program for women who need help in San Diego County.  There are two shelters, Julian’'s Anchorage and Julian's Sanctuary, which house the women and their children.  At any one given time, there are as many as 32 children living in the shelters.

The Board of Julian House will be putting together spring baskets for the children who live there and could use your help.  Donations of new school supplies would be greatly appreciated and will be included in the baskets.  If you can donate any new pencils, erasers, pens, notebooks, rulers, crayons, markers, backpacks, calculators, or lunch boxes, you will surely brighten someone's day!  Please bring all donations to your classroom by Wednesday, April 9, 2003.  The Board of Julian House thanks you so much for your generosity!!

Children's Hospital,  this is to collect items for Children's Hospital.  Please bring in: videos and board games that you no longer want and new new baseball hats.  (The board games needs to be in good condition with all the pieces included).  If you have any questions please see your fifth grade teacher.

Torrey Pines State Reserve - Volunteers are to help remove exotic vegetation.  Students need to be accompanied be a parent or they can sign a waiver, (which I have copies of in the classroom if they want to be dropped off or we decide to do a class visit).  It is located at Los Penasquitos Marsh Natural Preserve and Lagoon.  The first Saturday of every month and the second Saturday of March and May (odd months).  It is from 9 a.m. to noon.  Directions:  South on 15, West on 52, North on 5, take Carmel Valley exit, turn left (towards the beaches).  You will see North Beach kiosk on the left  on Carmel Valley Road.  Meet at the Torrey Pines State Park.  They will train us.  Call Denise at 858-755-2063, Ext. 308 for more details.  If there is enough interest, I will take a group some Saturday.

Howl (Helping Our Wildlife) - Helps care for orphaned and injured wildlife including transporting and rescuing, and fund raisers.  The location is at the volunteer's home.  Parents would be the primary volunteers for this community service, but the students are important assistants.  Parents and students must attend an orientation and training session at a home in Poway that lasts from 1 to 2 hours.  Afterwards they can volunteer.  Call 858-672-8573 for more information.
