As you probably know, students and staff at SDUSD use lots of paper! In fact, a 2001 audit of SDUSD trash bins revealed that 59% of the waste stream is paper. Recycling this paper is the right thing to do, both financially and for the environment.
Recycling decreases the amount of refuse produced at a school site and therefore trash hauling costs can be reduced. Also, under an innovative contract with our recycling hauler, we are able to save approximately $18,000 per month when the total weight of paper recycled by all district sites exceed 300 tons. Currently, we are recycling approximately 200 - 300 tons per month. This is a chance for all district sites to work together, each doing their part to help achieve the maximum savings.
Recycling diverts waste paper from the landfill and saves trees. If all the paper from the SDUSD waste stream was recycled we could save 170,000 trees a year!
Program Highlights: - Blue 3-cubic-yard recycling containers are located next to the gray trash dumpsters.

(Click here to order recycling bins for your school). - Small classroom recycling containers.
- All types of paper can be placed in the bins (anything that tears).

Talk to your custodian if you need a blue recycling bin. Make sure there is a brown trash can next to each recycling bin to discourage trash from being thrown in your recycling bin, and be consistent with the colors to help educate staff and students. Remember, blue is for recycling, brown is for trash.
Lastly, call us if you want to run a contest or you need help with educating teachers and students at your site. We can provide flyers and contest prizes, give presentations, and MORE!
Let's recycle all paper, reduce our waste disposal costs, conserve trees and save landfill space.
