MUIRLANDS MIDDLE SCHOOL
PTA MEETING
October 6, 2005
The meeting was called to order at 12:35 PM.
The minutes from the September 7, 2005 PTA meeting were
reviewed by three readers, finalized, and then posted on the website.
President’s Report—Linda Dowley
- Thank
you messages were given to the newsletter, PTA membership, Money Book, and
Foundation team members for their recent efforts and successful
activities.
- La
Jolla High School’s Foundation is putting on “Taste of La Jolla” on
Monday, October 17. The cost of
the tickets is $40 in advance, and the money supports the high school.
- La
Jolla High School football games are open to Muirlands families. The games should be attended as a
family and not as a drop off for students. The cost is minimal.
The schedule is on the La Jolla High School website.
- The
Bird Rock Community Council is sponsoring a Halloween window-painting
contest for students. Flyers were
made available. Anyone interested
in participating can contract Pamela Garvey at (858) 459-5590.
- Important
upcoming dates were mentioned.
These dates are listed in the newsletter.
- The
PTA Executive Board made a decision to offer an evening PTA meeting for
parents who are not able to attend day meetings. The evening meeting is tentatively scheduled for Thursday,
January 5 from 7:00 – 8:00 PM in the auditorium. Dessert and coffee will be provided. The meeting date and time still needs
to be confirmed with the Principal.
- The
next PTA meeting will be held on Thursday, November 3. The regular business meeting will take
place from 12:30 – 1:00 PM. The
Principal’s chat is scheduled for 1:00 – 2:10 PM. This is an informal opportunity to
interact with Mrs. Hargrave. Lunch
will be provided.
Treasurer’s Report—Linda Dowley (for Cheryl McCarthy)
- The
Treasurer’s Report was presented.
The proposed PTA budget was presented. The proposed budget is
similar to last year’s budget, with a few exceptions. The budget item for the student
directory has been transferred to the Foundation. The PTA regulations prohibit selling
advertising, which is used in the directory. The Operational/Administrative line item was increased to
$500 because this year the PTA absorbed the cost of printing materials for
new parents for back-to-school activities. Teri Newlee made a motion to
approve the Treasurer’s Report and budget. The motion was seconded by Dorie Gayner and passed.
- The
checks below were presented for approval. Mary Rose Schwartz made a motion
to approve the checks. Andrea
Brown seconded the motion, and it carried.

Officer and Committee Chair Reports
Membership – Tina Greenberg
- The
PTA has approximately 416 members at this point. The goal of 400 has been surpassed.
Money Books—Teri Newlee
- Approximately
240 Money Books have been sold. We
are $700 ahead of budget.
ASB Liaison – Dorie Gayner
- The
upcoming magazine drive will be with a different company. Volunteers will be needed to assist
with the drive.
- Oct.
24-28 is Red Ribbon Week. Poetry
and poster contests regarding making good choices will be held with gift
certificates for winners.
Governance— Jennifer Eve (for Margaret Ohara)
- There
has been a request to make the PTA meetings more inclusive for
Spanish-speaking individuals.
Starting in November, there may be a translator in attendance at
all PTA meetings.
- A
study will be conducted regarding how the Advisory period is being used.
- The
technology teacher is teaching keyboarding to 6th graders
during Advisory.
Hospitality—Ellen Sacks
- The
teachers appreciated the dinner provided on Back-to-School night. A thank you was offered to all parents
who provided desserts.
Newsletter—Anna Marie Cameron
- Due to
the holidays, there is a short deadline for the December newsletter. Items need to be submitted in a timely
fashion.
Mailing—Jennifer Eve
- The
process for getting the newsletters out has been smooth.
Cultural Arts – Jill Berg
- Ideas
have been submitted to Mrs. Hargrave for upcoming activities. A Western Day in December, Veteran’s
Day in November and some science-related ideas are being considered.
Foundation—Dorie Gayner
- Club
sign up has gone well. French and
tennis are full. Vocal music,
band, bowling and golf have been added to the original schedule.
- Approximately
80 tiles have been sold. These
will be placed on the outside of the auditorium.
- Small
and extra small t-shirts and sweatshirts will be in stock soon.
- A
luncheon/boutique sale will be held on November 10 at the La Jolla Country
Club. Tickets are on sale now.
- Casino
Night will be held on March 4 at the La Jolla Country Club.
- The
first pizza/coffee day was successful.
- Box
Tops for Education has been an existing, but not well-publicized
program. Efforts will be made to
increase awareness.
Vice Principal’s Report – Jennifer Nash and Peter Scott
- Both
vice principals spoke to the group regarding the school year thus far and
how well it seems to be going.
- Parents
asked questions regarding several different issues.
The next PTA meeting will be held on November 3 at 12:30.
The meeting was adjourned at 2:05 PM.
