MUIRLANDS MIDDLE SCHOOL
PTA MEETING
September 8, 2005
The meeting was called to order at 12:35 PM.
The minutes from the May 5, 2005 PTA meeting were
reviewed. Margaret Ohara made a motion
to approve the minutes, the motion was seconded and the minutes approved.
This year, PTA meeting minutes will be posted on the
Muirlands website. The minutes will be
available after three volunteer readers check the draft and make any
corrections.
Amy Cheshire presented information regarding the Bren
Maulkins Memorial Scholarship fund.
Tax-deductible contributions can be made to a scholarship that has been
established at La Jolla High.
Kelly Randall discussed the 6 to 6 program. Some changes have been made to the program
due to budget cuts. The program is currently
full, but there is a waiting list.
Kelly provided her contact information to Linda Dowley.
President’s Report—Linda Dowley
- Attendees
were welcomed and encouraged to join the PTA. At this point, there are 285 members.
- Volunteers
who labored during the summer and for back-to-school were thanked for
their hard work.
- The
roster for committee chairs was circulated and updated.
- The
calendar for important upcoming events was discussed.
- When
visitors come on campus, they need to sign in at the office and get a
visitor’s badge.
- Traffic
on Nautilus is still a concern.
Parents were asked to be careful and obey traffic laws. Parking is not allowed in the two
teachers’ lots and neither is double parking.
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT—Chris Hargrave
- The
reason for schedules not being distributed to students prior to the first
day of school was discussed. The
master schedule continues to change up until the last minute.
- Test
scores for the school were discussed.
Muirlands ranked very high, but the expectation to improve will
continue.
- This
year, parents will have the opportunity to meet Advisory teachers at
Back-To-School Night
- The
school hopes to have more space in the 6 to 6 program.
- There
is money in the budget to help students get tutoring in math and literature.
- Counselors
are an excellent resource to talk with if parents or students have
concerns.
Treasurer’s Report—Cheryl McCarthy
- The
Treasurer’s Report was presented.
The checks below were presented for approval. Denise Trapp made a motion to approve
the Treasurer’s Report and checks.
The motion was seconded and passed.

- The
balance in the account is $11,144.12
- Karen
Davis performed the audit of the treasurer’s records. They were correct and it was presented
to the Executive Board. Cheryl
McCarthy made a motion to adopt the auditor’s report. The motion was seconded and
passed.
Officer and Committee Chair Reports
Historian—Neva Sullaway
- Attendees
need to sign in at the PTA meeting and record volunteer hours.
- Volunteers
who come on campus should sign in under the “volunteer section” of the
sign-in book in the office.
Governance—Margaret Ohara
- The
purpose of Governance was explained.
The meetings are open and occur each month.
Hospitality—Ellen Sacks
- Dinner
will be provided for the teachers prior to Back-To-School Night. Volunteers for baking desserts are
needed.
Volunteer Coordinator—Amy Cheshire
- This
position is responsible for emailing messages regarding volunteer
opportunities. This position will
need to be filled by a new individual next year.
Newsletter—Anna Marie Cameron
- October
6 is the deadline for information to be included in the November
newsletter.
- Items
submitted electronically are appreciated.
Mailing—Jennifer Eve
- Volunteers
are needed to fold, label and staple newsletters. It is about a one-hour commitment each
time.
Money Books—Teri Newlee
- This
is the main fundraiser for the school.
The school keeps half of the $20 sale price.
First Day of School—Sarah Schrier
- Overall,
the committee received good feedback.
There were some logistical problems and some volunteers
no-showed. The suggestions for
improvement have been noted and will be incorporated for next year.
- Sarah
will chair this responsibility next year, but a volunteer is needed to
replace her the following year.
Foundation—Dorie Gayner
- There
are no small or medium shirts left in stock. Anyone who wants to purchase one to support the Foundation
can order one.
- 46
tiles have been sold. These will
be placed on the outside of the auditorium.
- The
interior of the auditorium will be improved with a bulletin board, shadow
boxes and a mural.
- A
luncheon/boutique sale will be held on November 10 at the La Jolla Country
Club.
- Casino
Night will be held in February.
- Volunteers
are still needed for after-school clubs.
These are paid positions.
Clubs meet one day a week for eight weeks from 2:15 to 3:30.
- Donations
for the Sunset at the Cove event are needed. Wine, money toward food, decorations, and desserts would be
appreciated.
- E-scrip
is easy to enroll at www.escrip.com
- Anyone
wishing to advertise in the family directory should contact Gina Hixson
regarding an ad.
Parents asked questions regarding several different issues.
The next PTA meeting will be held on October 6 at 12:30 in
the Teacher’s Lounge.
