Indian Education Program |
The Indian Education Program offered through the San Diego Unified School District is in existence to preserve and present the unique political, cultural, traditional and spiritual values of Native American people through education.
Mission Statement
To assist Native American students in graduating from high school with a quality education and a positive cultural/personal identity.
Organization
The Indian Education Program is supervised via the Parent Involvement Department. A Parent Advisory Committee-Indian Education composed of parents /guardians of Native American students attending San Diego Unified School District, teachers/staff under the teachers' contract actively working in the District and Native American secondary students attending a District school assist and advise the San Diego Unified School District in providing effective school programs and services for Native American students.
The services currently offered through the program include:
1. Academic Services K-12
· Academic assistance-tutorial,
etc.
· Consultation with parents and teachers.
· Monitoring of grades and attendance.
2. Cultural Enrichment - K-12
· Groups on Indian history,
cultural identity, traditions, heritage, arts and crafts, and field trips
· Self awareness and self-esteem building activities
· Cultural lessons and curriculum development
· Cultural Club Activities-drum & dance
· Language instruction
3. Social Service
· Referral to and monitoring
of special education service.
· Student advocacy.
· Referrals to counseling programs and other support programs.
· Referral to emergency assistance for families experiencing hardship.
· Consultation with parents via home, school, and phone contacts.
4. Post Secondary Planning Program
· Native American speakers
from a variety of career areas
· Career-oriented lessons for student groups
· Advocacy and liaison services
· Student incentives and post secondary/career workshops
· Post secondary counseling
· One-to-one and group counseling
· In-service for parents and District staff on post secondary and financial
aid
· Assistance in obtaining financial aid

6. Parent/Family Education
· Culturally-specific parent
information and support groups
· Activities for children in classrooms that assist in social and emotional

ELIGIBILITY GUIDELINES:
The Indian Education Programs provide
their services by request. Services may
be requested by students, parents, teachers and other school personnel. All
services are supplemental to existing services or are services not provided
by another school program.
Indian Education Program services
may be provided to any Native American
student who is:
· An enrolled member of a tribe, band, or other organized group, including
Alaskan natives
· The child or grandchild of a member of a tribe, band or other organized
group
