- As a visiting teacher, it is important
to arrive to assignments on time.
- Report to the principal's secretary to
sign in, receive your assignment and other pertinent information
you may need. Get a copy of that day's bell schedule if you do
not already have one. Be certain you understand it.
- Inquire whether you will be responsible
for any extra curricular or supervision (extra duty) assignments
in addition to the schedule of classes.
- Check the regular teacher's mailbox for
bulletins, urgent messages, or call slips for students.
- Visiting Teachers assigned to the Children's
Centers should report to the supervisor or person in charge.
- The length of the day and the release
time for visiting teachers varies from school to school.
- You are required to serve the same hours
as the regular teacher you are replacing, including preparation
periods, etc.
- Visiting teachers are required to remain
on duty as long as required by the principal.
- If the school is on a minimum day schedule,
and you were not provided that knowledge in advance before accepting
the assignment, you are to report to the principal to receive
assigned duties for the afternoon in order to be paid for the
full day.
Before
leaving the school for the day, you should check with the school
office or person in charge to see if you are to continue the assignment
for the next day. You are expected to continue in the assignment
until released.
- As a visiting teacher you are responsible
for accurate accounting for each student's attendance throughout
the day.
- Visiting teachers in elementary schools
must maintain student attendance records for their classes as
directed by the principal, in accordance with district and state
regulations.
- Secondary schools maintain a system which
accounts for students for each period of the day.
- Students on field trips, under observation
in school clinics, in nurse’s offices, etc., are not counted absent
as they are under the supervision of a member of the school's
staff.
- As a visiting teacher and an employee
of the district, you are expected to comply with the district
discipline policies as approved by the Board of Education and
the school site discipline plan for student behavior.
- When reporting to the site, find out what
that particular site’s policy may be for discipline as well as
that of the teacher for whom you are substituting.
- It is important to realize that classroom
control is of first concern and that friendliness and firmness,
along with a reasonable sense of humor, is a reliable procedure.
If a student becomes unruly, you may send them to the office with
a note explaining their behavior or send for an administrator
to come to the classroom to assist. Please feel you may ask for
assistance when needed.
