1. Visiting teachers are assigned by an automated computerized system called SAMS, which uses both an interactive voice response and internet based system.  Principals and teachers may request you by your Employee I.D. through SAMS/SmartFindExpress, but they are not authorized to directly employ you.  SAMS contacts you by phone to offer assignments.  It is important to notify the help desk if your phone number changes as soon as possible.

  2. You must register into the substitute assignment management system (SAMS) and receive a personal identification number (PIN) in order to receive assignments.

  3. For every assignment, there is a job number.  DO NOT accept an assignment without confirming the job number in the computer system.

  4. When accepting assignments in advance through the substitute assignment management system, you should call into SAMS, or login to SmartFindExpress and review your jobs periodically to ensure the assignments are still listed and active.

  5. When two visiting teachers show up for the same assignment, with the same job number, the visiting teacher with the job number assigned by the substitute assignment management system (SAMS), is the one with the assignment.

  6. After reporting to a school site for a visiting teacher assignment and you are informed that it is a half-day assignment, the school site should allow you to stay and work for the remainder of the school day and pay you for a full day. The computer should inform you of any half-day assignment by the number of hours presented by the voice instruction, before you accept the assignment.

  7. Please read the Substitute Assignment Management System (SAMS) brochure carefully, and follow the directions for registering and receiving assignments.  The Help Desk operator is available for further assistance between the hours 6:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. at (619) 725-8090.

  8. The system call-out times for making assignments are: *5:00-11:55 a.m. * 5 - 9:30 p.m. *weekends / holidays 5 - 9:30 p.m.

  9. The SAMS system will offer assignments in advance at the evening call-out period.  If SAMS calls in the morning, it is for a SAME DAY assignment.  You will hear the name of the school, the teacher, the subject, the start and ending time and date and a voice message from the teacher (if one was recorded.)

  10. On occasion, SAMS may call you after the start of the school day in order to staff the late requests. CALL THE SCHOOL IMMEDIATELY TO CONFIRM THEIR NEED.

  11. A visiting teacher is expected to accept any assignment for which he/she holds the proper credential.

  12. Consult the school directory at the back of this handbook for directions to the school.   (Thomas Brothers Map points have been provided.)

  13. Except in instances of unusual need, visiting teachers will be assigned in the subject and/or grade level for which they indicated a preference.

  14. To review or cancel a previously accepted assignment, follow the directions on the SAMS brochure.  If necessary to CANCEL--you must confirm the cancellation with the computer. REMEMBER - WAIT FOR CONFIRMATION! Call the school, when canceling an assignment 24 hours or less before the assignment begins.

  15. To modify a period of temporary unavailability, follow the options specified when calling the SAMS System.  An Explanation of these options is also listed in the SAMS brochure.

  16. Teacher absences are unpredictable and fluctuate greatly.  Therefore, it is impossible to predict how many days a visiting teacher will work in any given school week or year.  You are encouraged to be flexible to various grades/levels/subjects.

  17. Visiting Teachers are expected to work in all geographic locations.
