Purpose:
Mead Elementary has been rebuilt due to deterioration, enrollment
growth
and irregular grade configurations. It has also eased overcrowding at
Chollas
Elementary. |

New school size: The rebuilt school
can accommodate 450 students on 7.2 acres. |

Acquisition
and relocation: Not required. Under Proposition MM, the old Mead
Elementary
was to be demolished, rebuilt and expanded. Because expansion would
have
required the demolition of 18 homes and relocation of residents, the
new
Mead Elementary was instead built on seven acres of district-owned
property adjacent to Chollas Elementary. This action saved $10 million,
preserved affordable housing and avoided displacement of students
during
construction. The old Mead Elementary will possibly be leased or sold. |

The school will retain the name of Mead Elementary, in
honor of Francis Mead.

Campus features: 22 classrooms, 47,596
square feet of facilities,
7.2 acres, 66 parking spaces, joint-use field for soccer and baseball,
multipurpose room, library/media center, lunch shelter, elevator and
accessibility features, kitchen, faculty lounge, workroom,
administrative
center, and energy-efficient design features. The project also includes
a new
4,778-square-foot Child Development Center. |
