Memorial
Area Middle School (a.k.a. Undesignated School B)

School opens: To be determined.

Status: *
Update * At this time, district staff has changed its
focus to explore other options that include building the new school on
existing district property/sites. While this does not rule out the
original four proposed sites, the current direction is to minimize the
impact to housing to the extent possible. District staff will present a
new proposal to the Board of Education in fall 2006. An update will be
posted on this web page as more information is available. (Posted July

Location: Southcrest,
Mountain View
and Shelltown.

Purpose: Proposition MM
left two elementary schools as "undesignated" with
locations
to be determined at a later date depending on demographic need.
Undesignated
School B is planned to be a middle school to ease classroom
overcrowding
in the area and at Memorial Academy. The new Memorial
Area Middle School will serve approximately
1,300-1,500
students. It is anticipated that the Memorial Area Middle School will
assume
the 6th grade classes of the feeder elementary schools (Baker, Balboa,
Chavez, Emerson-Bandini); some of the 7th and 8th grade students of
Gompers
Secondary; students who are currently attending schools outside of the
area through Voluntary Ethnic Enrollment Program and Choice; and some
students
from Memorial Academy, which currently enrolls approximately 1,500
students
grades 6-9.
When
the new
Memorial Middle School opens, it will eliminate overcrowding at
Memorial
Academy, reduce its enrollment to 900-1,000 students and allow it to
return
to the preferred 6-8 grade configuration. The new middle school will
also
allow elementary schools in the area to return to the preferred K-5
grade
configuration, and will allow students in the area to attend a
neighborhood
school. |
