English Learner Awards Ceremony


 
Levels

All English Learners are are placed into one of the following levels based on their California English Language Development Test (CELDT) scores and the number of years they have been in the district.
Newcomer
Beginning
Early Intermediate
Intermediate
Early Advanced
Advanced


After the students reach proficient levels in English reading, writing, listening and speaking, they are reclassified and placed in all English classes.


 
Courses

All English Learners take a two period Literacy Block appropriate for the English Level.


 
Students also take
:

Math
Science (7th and 8th only)
History
P.E.
Elective (6th grade only)


These courses are offered at various English levels. When possible, the Early Advanced and Advanced students, and sometimes the Intermediate students, are placed in a Mainstream English Cluster (MEC). A MEC is a regular class with English speaking students that has a small cluster of English Learners.
